Dear County Executive Levy,
I understand Suffolk’s desire to operate the Trap & Skeet Range in
Southaven County Park, however, the environmental considerations make that action neither appropriate nor legal. Community
members and environmentalists are willing to work alongside sporting enthusiasts to find an appropriate location for a County
Trap & Skeet Range, but there can be no place more inappropriate than the Pine Barrens Core, the Carmen’s River Watershed
and the State-designated Special Groundwater Protection Area.
I am very disappointed that efforts by the civic and
environmental community to communicate with your office about these concerns have gone unanswered for months. Even requests
for information in order to determine jurisdiction by the New York State Central Pine Barrens Commission—a body of which
you are a voting member—have not been answered.
Your administration has successfully breathed life back into
the County land preservation program. It would be contradictory to now develop the land we so passionately sought to preserve.
Public
policy and legislation have curtailed many activities in the Pine Barrens since the closure of this facility and resumption
here is both contra-indicated and legally proscribed. Sportsman activities have a long tradition on Long Island, but we
know more about the delicate nature of Suffolk’s environment now than we did 50 years ago. There is a better place
for a County Trap & Skeet Range.
Please stop the illegal operation of the Trap & Skeet Range at Southaven Park now,
before it makes a permanent negative mark, on an otherwise excellent County environmental record under your administration.
Instead please accept the offer by the civic and environmental community to work with the sportsman and government officials,
to identify and develop a facility at an appropriate location.
